79!

With the ever so damp weather we’ve been having, I expected Michel Cote and I would end up canceling our round of golf today. But when I got up, there was just a little drizzle so we decided to tee off and if it rained we’d just bail out to Starbuck’s for lattes. Instead, the weather was passable and I shot an effortless 79. Seven bogeys, eleven pars. Not even a sniff at a penalty stroke and no heroic chips ins of super long putts. It’s my fifth round under 80 this year (after none in 2015-2016).P1010035_lum

Yep! Snow Already

Gee! After last winter the last thing I wanted to see was the earliest Seattle snowfall in 42 years.

Great Sand Dunes

Monday’s destination was Great Sand Dunes National Park, one of the few remaining National Parks on our target list. We had another perfectly clear day and an easy, three-hour drive from Colorado Springs to the Park.GreatSandDunes_4346-1

Royal Gorge

We spent today exploring Colorado’s Royal Gorge and the famous Royal Gorge Bridge. The Gorge is one of the deepest in Colorado and the bridge was for many years the highest in the world. In the morning we took a very chilly and dusty jeep tour over Colorado back roads and, eventually, over the bridge. In the afternoon, we boarded the Royal Gorge Route train for a leisurely trip along the Arkansas River and under the bridge. The journey included a yummy lunch. Here’s an album of photos:

Giraffes

We had been excited to visit the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo since we saw the photos of their giraffes. Expectations were meant and exceeded. It was a very nice zoo but the giraffes were simply magical. With the elevated platforms visitors are eye-to-eye with the giants and they are just soooo amazing.

Morning at Garden of the Gods

We decided to get up early to see sunrise at Garden of the Gods. The clouds and lighting weren’t great but it was still a lovely sight. Then we stopped for  a quick Starbuck’s latte before heading to the zoo.

Off to Colorado

We began our week-long Colorado adventure this morning; leaving a dreary SeaTac. It was quite a surprise when we stepped out of the Denver terminal into temperature in the mid 70s.

Golf Handicap Index down to 11.5

What a slog it’s been. Since getting down to 11.6 in September of 2014, my handicap had pretty much trended upward, hitting 16.6 in September of last year and was still at 16.4 in mid May. Maybe the persistent lessons are actually helping. Due to the never-ending winter of 2016-2017, I ended of playing way fewer rounds that I had planned this year. I’m going to be curious to see what spring 2018 brings.

Flicker

This little fellow perched himself on a branch of the snag where so many birds hang out. But he had an added bonus. I had the sprinkler running and every 30 seconds or so he got a little shower… which he seemed to enjoy.flicker_1010882
