Consuming one can of soda per day, either sugar-sweetened or diet, increased a person’s risk of stroke over time by 16 percent.
Spanish Stamps

Last month, after years of monitoring stamp sales and auctions, I came across a collection of mint Spanish from 1993 through 2009, almost exactly complementing my previous holdings covering 1956-1991. I just ordered the 1992 stamps from a dealer in Spain and when those arrive I’ll be nearly current. I now have the big task of transferring the newly acquired items to my style binders and cataloging the some 1500 stamps. It’s tedious and will take a couple hundred hours, I expect.

When Trisha was presented with the opportunity to take care of a neighbor’s dog for a week, she just couldn’t say no. So we have the delightful company this week of Miss Lucy, a sweet, very energetic eight-month old black lab. Today we took her to Rattlesnake Lake where she explored the paths and took a couple of brief dips in a creek.

I don’t usually play golf in the afternoon; the pace of place is just too slow for me. But with the gloomy weather forecast for the rest of the week, I decided to squeeze in a round late this afternoon. And it was a dreadfully slow second nine holes. But I still managed to shoot 40 over the back nine for a respectable 85. And the sun peeked below the overcast as we stood on the 17th green for a stunning view of the south-west face of Mt. Si.

She’s Back!

We hadn’t seen any sign of raccoons around the house for almost a year, I think. Then just yesterday while doing some weeding in the back yard a chubby lone raccoon waddled past us. Now she’s appearing every day, during the day time. We’ve fed her a few peanuts but that’s going to be it. This little lady will have to fend for herself.
77! Finally a Solid Round of Golf

My golf game has been very inconsistent this year so I had no expectations when I headed out to Mt. Si this morning. After difficult rounds at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge and Prospector at Suncadia I anticipated nothing but more mediocre golf. Instead I was treated to an effortless 77. Go figure! It seemed like nearly every shot was just right. Things started well with a 30-foot putt to save par on the first hole. After a bogey at #2 I went through the next eleven holes at even par. I ended up with twelve pars and ten one-putt holes: a super steady round of golf.
Spring/Early Summer

After a truly dreary final two weeks of May we were treated to one of those stunning mild Northwest spring days. Sunny, low 70s, light breeze…. Our plants, of course, are in their glory. Most of the rhododendrons have finished flowering but the summer bloomers and annuals are still popping out. The aquatic iris in our little pond are enormous this year:

New Visitor to Our Back Yard

Shortly after arriving home from our return flight from NJ, we were excited to see this little fellow at one of the back yard feeders.
This is the first sighting of the Western Tanager is our yard but hopefully not the last. They are truly beautiful birds.

Easy Birthday Day

We’re in Sicklerville, NJ as part of our visit with Trisha’s sister and we spent the day touring the spy exhibit at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, going to the latest Star Trek movie, and ending with a delicious dinner at the Wasabi Hibachi restaurant in Williamstown. All in all is was a most relaxing day and not a bad way to “celebrate” my first birthday over 65!
