Last, Last Snow?

Two weeks ago we thought we had the last snow of the winter. But this morning we were greeted with 3.5 inches of the white stuff. And it’s opening day for the Mariners! It’s supposed to be 50 degrees plus later today but I’m skeptical. Here’s the view from the front porch at 6:00 a.m. this morning. Sigh!

Endless Winter

It’s the day after Easter and a small storm just blew through covering the ground and trees with fresh SNOW! I see that the mountain passes are going to get another foot or so of snow and Snoqualmie Pass got a record 141 inches in March.

Spring Day Golf

Gee! Maybe spring really is here. I took advantage of the beautiful 60-degree temperature to get in 18 holes at Mt. Si. I recorded my best score in nearly six months with an 87. I hit eight fairways but the short game was great today. One chip in and made putts of 15 and 27 feet kept total putts to just 27. I was just eight over par through thirteen holes but I didn’t manage any pars over the final six holes.

Last Winter Snow?

It’s the last weekend of March so maybe this is the final snowfall of the winter. We are sure tired of shoveling and driving throught this stuff.

Bonsai Collection Closing

I read today that Weyerhaeuser is closing the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection garden on April 2nd. It’s so sad that these majestic plants –some over 200 years old– will no longer be on display to the public. The Puget Sound Bonsai Association has some photos of these majestic little plants but they are really breathtaking in person. We will miss not being able to visit them occasionally. The good news is, so far, I’ve not heard anything about plans to close the adjacent Rhododendron Gardens.

Seattle P-I Last Issue

Following last month’s closure of Denver’s Rocky Mountains News, Seattle lost one of city’s two dailies as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer published its last issue today after 146 years in business. As a news junkie, I’m saddened at the loss of these institutions.

Golf at Snoqualmie Ridge

I took half a day off with some of my Microsoft golf partners and we tackled the TPC Course at Snoqualmie Ridge. There was still snow in shady areas of the front nine so we played the back nine twice. I managed a satisfying 49-48, a huge improvement over the 60 I shot in October. Tees shots were very solid but putting on those professional greens is another realm of difficulty and I struggled with 42 putts.

Grammatical Presidency

At last! A president who speaks in complete sentences. Grammar aside, I’m totally excited at the inauguration of President Obama. I remember watching his speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention and thinking “Geez, let’s nominate this guy.” Well, eventually we did and now he’s here in the White House. I thought the day’s Inauguration events were spellbinding. The whole area between the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial is inspiring anyway and seeing the National Mall packed with millions of cheering citizens was just thrilling.

Break in the weather… at last

The rain finally let up last night and we even got a peek at the sun a few times this morning. Our neighborhood was spared and even downtown North Bend had only nuisance levels of water. But just a few miles north and west of us things were much worse. This is an aerial photo from the Seattle Times of the Snoqualmie River. The Carnation Golf Course is kind of at the middle left of this photo. I see that the official rainfall for Snoqualmie Pass, about 15 miles east of us on I-90 was, over 17 inches. The Seattle Times has some excellent photos of area flooding.

"Historic Flooding"…

That was the lead on the local news this evening. The snow finally stopped Monday morning and over the next forty-eight hours the temperature has gone from below freezing to the mid 50s along with non-stop torrential rain. One town near the coast has had over 14 inches of rain in the last day and a half. I-5 will soon be closed south of Tacoma. There was even water over the road leading to the Mt. Si bridge we cross to get home: the first time ever.

Here’s a photo of downtown Snoqualmie where some of you who have visited us have attended church or gone to dinner.
