Impressionism at Seattle Art Museum

Cézanne still life
I took the day off and Trisha and I spent the morning perusing the Impressionism exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum. The format was unique: the Impressionist works were displayed alongside earlier paintings that inspired them. The audio program nicely explained the relationship between the works and how the artists encountered the inspirational creations. We were especially delighted to see the influence of so many Spanish artists like Goya, El Greco and Velasquez. Afterwards, we had lunch and picked up luscious tomatoes and peaches at the Pike Place Market.

More good golf

Even after waking up a 4:20 a.m. to make our tee time, I stayed alert enough to shoot 89 on the very demanding (129 slope rating) Trophy Lake course. More amazingly, I hit eleven fairways and had zero penalty strokes.

Pileated Woodpecker

The pileated woodpecker who lives in a big snag next door has finally discovered our suet feeders… and brought along a junior member of the family. They now visit regularly but it’s a little difficult to get a good photo. In this little clip it’s hard to appreciate this little guy’s dimensions: he’s a good 14-18 inches tall! We also get a large number of downy woodpeckers and while not so gigantic they are quite beautiful critters.

Golf – Great Round

Following a horrific 103 yesterday at Newcastle-Coal Creek I had my best score of the year with an 82 at Mt. Si. After posting 43 on the front nine with just 12 putts I shot 39 on the back. Over the last eleven holes I was just three over par.

A bear! A bear!

I stepped out of bed this morning, glanced out the window and there was a largish black bear strolling through the yard. Just passing through, thank goodness. He looked quizzically at our little water fall and then headed back into the woods thankfully not noticing the chuck full bird feeders just off the patio (which had been raided by raccoons overnight).

Cool!!! We’ve got A/C

We were advised to replace our old, underpowered, and inefficient furnace so we had a heat pump installed. Now we have heat and air conditioning too… for those three days over 90 we get every year.

Mt. Rainier

We escorted Trisha’s nephew, Chris, and his bride-to-be, Melissa, to Mt. Rainier. It had been several years since we’d visited the mountain so it was a fun adventure for us as well as for our guests. The weather was perfect and we were treated to endless stunning vistas of one of the northwest’s most glorious attractions. Even in mid summer there was still plenty of melting snow to feed the mountain streams and wonderful wildflowers framed the roads and trails.

Mariners Win

We attended our second Mariners’ game this year and were treated to a rare win: 8-2 over the also last-place Cleveland Indians. For our pre-game snack we had Ivar’s fish/clams and chips. The highlights of the game were Raul Ibáñez‘s 2nd-inning grand slam and Félix Hernández‘s dominating, 8 strike outs, pitching. On the drive home an enormous rising full moon escorted us on the I-90 bridge over Lake Washington.

Glorious Summer

It’s that delicious time of year in the Pacific Northwest; it’s why we moved here. The days are sunny and mostly in the 70s and evenings and morning are cool enough that you need a sweater or jacket. Plants love it. Here’s one of the scores of blossoms on the Clematis off the back patio.

Not an orphan

It turns out that the baby elk (see the June 29 post) is not an orphan after all. This afternoon when I got home from the practice range the baby was in the front yard nibbling on the wild violets. I grabbed the camera and was snapping a couple of photos from inside the house when mother appeared and directed the little one away from the threatening human in the window. The pair meandered through the front yard and out into neighbors’ lots. It’s good to know the little one isn’t alone.
