Happy Birthday Internet!
Posted in News on 30-Oct-2009
Forty years ago today UCLA engineer Charley Kline sent a two character message to colleague Bill Duvall at Stanford, an event regarded as the first Internet transmission. There’s a superb book recounting the efforts of now famous individuals to link multiple computers at various research facilities: Where Wizards Stay Up Late. What’s really fascinating are the numerous problems that had to be solved: after all, everything was being done for the first time.
Winter Already?
Posted in Weather on 27-Oct-2009
Wow! It was just 89 days ago that we had the 103-degree day. Now it’s not even November yet and we have an early introduction to winter: the first snowfall on Mt. Si. But that was at the end of the day after…. monsoon rains early in the day, an hour of so of sunshine in the afternoon, spectacular thunder and lightening in the early evening followed by hail, then sleet, and finally, around 10:00 a light dusting of snow. Oh, and the first flood warnings too.The strangest weather day in our 14+ years here and the earliest snowfall.
Another Wedding
We attended Trisha’s niece’s (Katie) wedding today on the Jersey shore. The threatening weather held off just long enough for a lovely ceremony on the beach followed by a yummy feast at the reception.
Brrrr!!!
As I headed out for my 7:37 tee time the dashboard showed 36 degrees. As I strode down the second fairway there was even a bit of frost on the ground. I love fall in Washington. I had a so-so round of golf –shooting 88 at Mt. Si— but what a spectacular late September morning.
Euphorbia Revenge
Posted in Around the house, Personal on 22-Sep-2009
One of my weekend tasks was to remove a very large Euphorbia plant from the back yard. It’s an old-timer we’d had for many years and it had kind of overwhelmed it’s space. We decided just to eradicate it totally. After a little digging and cutting the huge tuberous roots were in the recycle bag and body of the plant in the compost pile. I felt a little sting as I wiped the perspiration form my right eye and headed into the house to watch the Seahawks game. Within an hour or so I was in agony. I somehow got a bit of the euphorbia sap into my eye. A couple of hours in the emergency room provided some relief. A visit to the ophthamologist on Monday morning confirmed mild damage that would heal in a couple of weeks. I never thought of gardening as a hazardous hobby.
Sad Day
Trisha and I were saddened to read the news of the death of Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary. Her voice and those many classic songs always bring back memories of that tumultuous period of 1965-69 which corresponded exactly with my four years as an undergraduate at the University of Toledo.
Favorite Day of the Summer
Posted in Entertainment, Golf on 28-Aug-2009
This has turned out to be one of my favorite days of the Summer: taking the day off from work and watching the senior PGA golfers during the opening round of the Boeing Golf Classic. I get up early enough to play eighteen holes myself then spruce up and head to the TPC Snoqualmie Ridge course. Once there, I watch the pros warm up, have a hot dog for lunch and then follow some of my favorite players around the course for the afternoon. Finally, I’m always impressed that many of these guys go right from the final hole back to the practice range. They are just so remarkably good. And what a glorious setting: is this a fantastic finishing hole or what?
Rain…. At Last!
Posted in Weather on 10-Aug-2009
I swear I could hear the plants “Ahhhing” in relief. We finally got some real rain; for the first time in 83 days. A light sprinkle fell most of the night to end our three-month rainless streak.
Quarter of a Century

Twenty-Five years ago today Trisha and I exchanged wedding vows at the District Court House in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Surrounded by our families, sheriff deputies and even a couple of inmates, the presiding judge led us through a brief morning ceremony so we could all make it home in time to watch the 100-meter finals of the ’84 Summer Olympics. We had a marvelous afternoon with a reception in the shady back yard of our first home at 1561 Marian Drive in Ann Arbor.
We celebrated our 25th anniversary with a weekend at the Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, WA. Trisha got to spend a few days away from her University work and household tasks; we had an afternoon at the spa; and Sunday morning Trisha rode the golf cart with me for a delightful round of golf. The Suncadia course is a lovely setting meandering through the woods and we were the only people on the course so we enjoyed a tranquil few hours together taking in the delicious summer morning.
Weather Records
Posted in Weather on 1-Aug-2009
June and July have been seen numerous weather records…
- We had the hottest day in Seattle history with that 103 degrees on July 29
- The low that day was 71, marking the first time in Seattle weather records that the temperature failed to drop below 70 at some point during the day
- There was virtually no rain with an official 0.06 inches of precipitation
- We had five days above 90 degrees; we usually don’t have that many all summer
- July followed an also very dry (0.18 inches of rain) and warm (three degrees above normal) June
- There were a record 29 consecutive days without rain (May 20-June 17)
