Whoohoo!!! Golf handicap at 14.6

Oct. 22 handicapMy Ghin handicap index went to 14.6 with this week’s update; the lowest ever. Maybe I should stop playing now. The bad part is to keep it there I have to consistently shoot scores in the low 80’s… Not a likely development. Still, I’m happy to be at this point given that I was at 19.0 at the end of July; a year ago at this time my handicap was 16.2.

Great score on a lovely fall day

I love fall golf… and why not! After several weeks of so-so golf I shot a devine 79 today; my second-best score ever. Four hours walking the Mt. Si course on a cool fall afternoon would have been fun in any case but a one-over par 37 on the back nine surely added to the experience. That included a birdie 2 on the 17th hole where my tee shot ended up just four inches from a hole-in-one.

Snoqualmie Challenge

Through a friend I got a chance to play the TPC Snoqualmie Ridge course today. It has been the setting of the Boeing Classic Champions’ Tour event for the past several years as well as an LPGA tournament. From the blue tees it’s one of the tougher courses in the area with a 137 slope rating. After a shaky triple bogey eight on the first hole I settled down to play bogey golf over the next eight holes for a respectable 48 on the front nine finishing with a birdie 2 on the 180-yard par three ninth. After that, let’s just say things didn’t go so well and I ended up shooting well over 100. Nonetheless, it was a lovely fall day and great fun playing a very challenging PGA-level course in a spectacular setting.

Fall is here… maybe a hint of Winter too

We’ve had rain every day for the past eight days and last night’s forecast included references to snow in the mountain passes for the first time this fall. Then this morning there was a hint of frost on the grass. Fall here always includes some stunning days, however. Yesterday after work I played nine holes of golf and the combination of the cool, clear air and the rays of the setting sun illuminating the rocky west face of Mount Si made for a stroll that was both exhilarating and relaxing at the same time. Oh, and I shot a 41: that’s always good for the spirit as well.

Just now as I’m writing this a big, fat raccoon waddled past the kitchen window checking to see, no doubt, if Trisha had left any of the bird feeders out for the night.

Excellent Outing

Saturday morning I was up and out early for a round of golf at Jefferson Park. I arrived too late to warm up and things started out badly losing my first tee shot of the day. I never recovered and felt awkward all morning, finishing the final two holes in a steady rain and limping in with a sorry 97.

But Sunday after watching five hours of Ryder Cup matches the clouds lifted and I was off to Mt. Si where I had the course pretty much to myself. And what a great finish to the weekend. I logged a rock-solid three-over-par 39 on the front nine and ended up with a best-this-year score of 81 with eleven pars.

More good golf

Even after waking up a 4:20 a.m. to make our tee time, I stayed alert enough to shoot 89 on the very demanding (129 slope rating) Trophy Lake course. More amazingly, I hit eleven fairways and had zero penalty strokes.

Golf – Great Round

Following a horrific 103 yesterday at Newcastle-Coal Creek I had my best score of the year with an 82 at Mt. Si. After posting 43 on the front nine with just 12 putts I shot 39 on the back. Over the last eleven holes I was just three over par.

Best Golf Books

I’ve recently had a few conversations about favorite golf books and it made me think some about the sixty or so I have and which have been truly helpful. It’s a short list. Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible surely helped my scoring (as did attending his day-long short game clinic) and How to Break 90 changed my idea of what success is for the average hacker like me. I recently ordered Raymond Floyd‘s The Elements of Scoring; I’ve been intrigued by reviews of the book and I admire Floyd’s easy swing and precision short game.

Golf at Harbour Pointe

With a couple of my Microsoft team mates I took on the ultra-tough Harbour Pointe golf course in Mukilteo. With a rating of 136, Harbour Pointe in one of Seattle’s most difficult tracks. In my only previous effort there two years ago I suffered through a miserable 109 score. Today was much better. Although still erratic off the tee I hit five greens in regulation and managed three birdies (via 35 and 53 foot putts) on a classic Arthur Hills (a University of Michigan grad, by the way) layout for a 91. Here’s a shot of the signature 11th hole overlooking Puget Sound and Whidbey Island.

Golf – Mt. Si

Finally, a respectable round. I played steady enough in all phases of the game and shot an 86 (with 5 pars and one birdie). It was a good start (three pars on the first four holes) and a good finish: birdie 2 on number 17 and a par save from the adjacent fairway on 18. And there was a very satisfying (wind-aided) 308 yard drive on number 2.
