Golf – Paa-Ko Ridge, New Mexico

11:50 tee time with Tim Fusco at Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Club just outside Albuquerque. Lush, 27-hole layout. Played poorly (101) with just two pars and nine double-bogeys. Still a beauteous sunny day. Afterwads, drove to Albuquerque Airport to pick up Trisha. Back to Santa Fe; informal dinner with Fusco’s in their condo room.

Golf – Black Mesa GC, New Mexico

9:10 tee time with Tim Fusco at Black Mesa Golf Club about 25 miles north of Santa Fe. Beautiful, challenging, interesting course: it appears in the “top 100 courses” lists of several golf magazines. Didn’t play very well, shooting a 96 with just two pars and one birdie.

New Mexico trip – Seattle to Santa Fe

Mid-morning flight: Seattle to Denver to Albuquerque. With only a 35-minute lay-over in Denver I made the flight to Albuquerque but my luggage didn’t. Had to wait two-and-half hours for the next plane. Drove to Santa Fe arriving after 8:00 p.m. Picked up food for dinner at Whole Foods. Below is one of several dramatic sunsets we were treated to.

Las Vegas – Cirque du soleil

We spent the afternoon wandering the main Las Vegas strip and got lost in Caesar’s Palace. It took us a couple of hours and miles of walking to finally get out. The day had a super finish, though: we attended a fabulous Cirque du soleil show–“Ka” at the MGM Grand hotel. And what a grand theater it is. We had big cushy seats with speakers embedded in the backs and the staging was way more elaborate than the travelling shows we’ve seen in Seattle. It didn’t hurt to have that nearly half gallon piña colada to go with our popcorn.

Bryce Canyon – Utah

Tuesday (April 17) we drove from Las Vegas to Bryce Canyon National Park, staying at the Bryce Canyon Lodge. We had time to walk around a bit before night fall and see the stunning hoodoos at sunset. Wednesday morning was brisk and windy. The blustery weather added excitement to the short hikes we took to take in still more surreal scenery. By mid-day it was off to Zion.

Golf – The Bear Trace

The Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain (Crossville, TN) is a gorgeous and very challenging Jack Nicklaus design with a 128 slope rating from the white tees. I didn’t play very well (102) and this isn’t a forgiving layout but one I’d love to play again sometime: it’s a lovely setting.

Golf – Knoxville, TN

Played River Islands course just outside of Knoxville, TN with Tim Fusco. It’s a beautiful Arthur Hills design meandering along and crossing the French Broad River. I shot a respectable 95 on the 129 slope rating course with four pars. I’d play this one again any time.
