Last Day in the Redwoods
This morning we did the final leg of our Highway 101/Redwoods trip spending the morning in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park driving the famous Avenue of the Giants. This view is typical of our three days in the forests: incredibly beautiful and peaceful.
After lunch at the F.K. Lane trailhead at the southern end of Avenue of the Giants, we drove 206 miles north and east to Grants Pass, OR.
In the Redwoods
We started the day at Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and walked the famous Stout Grove trail. Then it was south to the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and Redwood National Park and finally at the Best Western in Eureka, CA.
Highway 101
It’s Day 1 of our trip south along Highway 101 to the coastal redwoods parks. We did some of this route during our 2010 retreat to Cannon Beach but today we have perfect clear weather. The coastal views are spectacular.
Home Again
The return trip from Denver to North Bend was pleasant and uneventful. I had a window seat and caught a glimpse of the Grand Tetons over Wyoming.
Denver Golf Day 3
Our brief golf sojourn ended with a morning round at Red Hawk Ridge near Castle Rock, CO. This isn’t an especially scenic course but its wide fairways and generous greens present scoring opportunities for hacker golfers. I had perhaps my best ball-striking day ever tagging two 270-yards plus drives and recording no blow-up holes for a final score of 86. I finally felt like the March lessons and countless hours of practice over the past couple of months are paying dividends.
Denver Golf Day 2
Today we were at the picturesque Arrowhead golf club near Littleton, CO. It is certainly one of the most beautiful courses I’ve ever played, especially the back nine. The Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design meanders through and around red sandstone rock formations and ponds. We even saw a rattlesnake! Unfortunately, the greens were the most difficult I’ve ever played on and our scores (not reported here) reflected that.
Denver Golf Day 1
Today we played two rounds at Legacy Ridge in the Denver suburb of Westminster. It’s a very nice municipal course with ample fairways and huge greens and at $44/round a real bargain. The Arthur Hills design offered an excellent variety of holes with interesting doglegs that blend beautifully into the natural topography (I love Hills’ designs). I shot 87 during the morning round but stumbled to 94 in the afternoon thanks to a 9 on one hole. Still a very nice day in spite of an aching tooth.
Off to Colorado
… for three days of golf with brothers-in-law Bo and Zyg. Flying first-class with lovely weather en route.
Anniversary – 31 Years
We spent our anniversary in Whistler, BC, riding up and down Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, enjoying the spa and having a terrific dinner and dessert. A pretty decadent day. Here we are 1400 feet up on the Peak-to-Peak Gondola.
