Spring…? Or is it Fall?
Posted by nbdog in Uncategorized, Weather on 6-Apr-2011
On April 1st I resisted the urge to post a comment on the lousy March weather and given the terrible storms in the northeast and south I feel guilty whining about a little rain. But just for archiving purposes here are a few notes on our local climate experience.
Last month was the rainiest March in fifteen years. Here in North Bend we had some kind of precipitation on 28 of 31 days and overnight lows were below freezing nearly every night. April is off to a similar glum start. It’s rained every day so far –so that’s rain on 33 of the last 36 days– and the looking at the extended forecast we could have precipitation nearly every day this month. Next year we are planing on spending a few weeks of March and April in Arizona.
Winter in the Pacific Northwest

Iowa City Forecast
Looking at the U.S. weather over the past week or so I remember why I’m happy to be out here in the far west coast. The wind chill in Iowa City, where I lived in 1972-77, is going to be -25 tonight with something like 17 inches of snow on the ground since last week. I loved Iowa but I recall there were some cruel stretches of winter. By contrast, we’re in the middle of the same winter here in North Bend and it looks like we’ll see 45 degrees tomorrow and I’ll likely head to the golf course.
Rain, rain, rain…
We had the big pre-Thanksgiving record snowfall and frigid temperatures; now the thermometer is in the mid 50s and we’ve had a record two-day rainfall. Over 4 inches at the airport and almost that much here in the foothills. Trisha and I made a quick visit to Snoqualmie Falls to get a glimpse of the fabulous cataract. It’s always impressive but after this much rain the Falls are really thrilling to see.

Big Snow
The lovely snowfall that began Sunday afternoon kept up through most of Monday and into Tuesday morning and ended up being one of the heaviest pre-Thanksgiving Seattle snowstorms ever. We measured a little over a foot and Trisha stayed home both days.
Early Snow
It’s a good thing I got some photos of fall leaves earlier this month; today we’re being treated to a beautiful, but early winter snow. It’s left a delicate white coating on the few remaining leaves and flowers.
First snow on the mountain

We’re having our first prolonged fall rainstorm: steady rain and drizzle since Friday night. And behind the mist atop Mt. Si I got a glimpse of the first visible snow of the season. Many of our trees, like the little maple here, still have most of their leaves on them so the yard has lovely fall colors. But that won’t last much longer.
Cooler! Finally.
After three consecutive days of record highs –including 94 on Thursday– the forecast calls for a high temp of just 80 today.
Hint of Spring
After several days of typical cool, drizzly Seattle spring weather we got a peek at the sun for a while today. I dropped by Mt. Si and got in nine holes. What a great setting: 55 degrees, mixed sun and clouds and still a hint of snow on the mountain. It didn’t hurt that I shot an easy 40. What could have been: I missed birdie putts from six and nine feet!
What’s Wrong with this Picture?

After a record mild winter, we’re having a rather dismal early spring. We’ve had some rain or showers almost every day since March 21 and today… what a surprise! A dusting of snow decorated the trees –and surprised our ducks– early in the morning. Throughout the day we’ve had periods of bright sunshine, rain, sleet and snow. I did some yard work early in the day and then settled in to watch the first rounds of the Masters Golf tournament.
One Month into Retirement
I celebrated my first month into retirement with a round of golf at the very challenging China Creek course at Newcastle. I got through the first seven holes at just five over par; a solid start on a course where I’ve never broken 100 before. I managed a 95 when the day was done but the golf was the least of it. Hearing the miserable winter weather in most of the rest of the country I so very much appreciated the lovely setting we had for the last Friday of March. That’s Seattle and Lake Washington in the background
