It’s been a blustery fall day: occasional showers with gusty winds. A perfect day to cook. After getting a beef/vegetable stew into the crock pot I whipped up a batch of my favorite oatmeal-chocolate chip-coconut cookies. Yum!
More Backyard Redesign

Trisha wanted to expand the areas for sun plants around the edge of the grass in the backyard which resulted in lots of sod being removed. I decided to try using it for a grassy pathway around one of the plant islands near our woodpecker snag. A ton of work for sure but I think it will be nice in the spring when the transplanted sod reestablishes and we add more mulch and edging plants. Here’s a before and after….
Dreary Day but Fall Colors Still Beautiful

It’s been a gray weekend with a little drizzle today; and noticeably cool. So far, though, most of our trees have retained their leaves, especially the maples and dogwoods. Here’s one of our oldest trees, a little dogwood (a pink flowering cornus Kousa) that has been transplanted three times and now sits in the very northwest corner of our lot.
End of the Season at Suncadia
With the foggy gloom persisting in the Seattle area I decided to head over the mountains to get in a final round at the Suncadia Resort before the courses close for the season next week. What a glorious fall day it turned out to be. Following a thirty-minute fog delay I teed off with one of my regular golf partners, Julian Benjamin and by the seventh hole we were in bright morning sunshine. The golf was just average (90) but the Prospector course is so wonderfully serene it’s like a meditation session. The pond adjacent to the fifth and sixth holes looked like this:

Back from New Mexico Golf
This past week I got together with two brothers-in-law for a few days of golf around Albuquerque and Santa Fe, NM. I played the Paa-Ko Ridge and Black Mesa courses I had visited in 2008 and also got in two rounds at the University of New Mexico course. All three were superb. We had great weather on Tuesday and Wednesday but our Thursday round at Black Mesa was cut short by a rain shower accompanied by winds gusts of over 40 mph.

Whew! We Just Missed the SD Blizzard
Wall, SD, Oct. 4
Well, maybe not “just missed” but we were in Wall, SD 18 days ago and the temperature was in the low 80’s. Today there’s a blizzard covering the entire Black Hills and I-90 is closed between Wall and Sheridan, WY a stretch we drove as late as September 12.

Another Visit by the Hawk

We’ve learned that whenever the yard is eerily devoid of small birds around our patio feeders it probably means the local hawk in nearby. This morning he spent a good deal of time swooping through the yard mostly terrorizing the jays. And a few times he took a break just outside the kitchen window in our big red Japanese maple.
Hint of Winter
With a brief break from the rain and a few minutes of sunshine I was able to spot some snow on the peak Bessemer Mountain behind the house. It’s about 55 degrees down here but apparently quite a bit nippier at 5,100 feet. And Kamikaze Falls is roaring after the record rain fall.
It’s still only September…
… but the weather is more like November. This might end up as the wettest Seattle September since 1978; thirty-five years ago. That will be no surprise after watching the University of Washington and Oregon football games yesterday and having peered out as pretty much steady rain since Tuesday. I see SeaTac airport had 1.71 inches of rain yesterday and Astoria, on the coast, got almost 4 inches. The Weather Channel is forecasting a major storm tonight with 2 to 5 inches of rain and winds as high as 70 mph.
