Christmas Day 2012

Whew… what a gloomy Christmas Day in North Bend.  Blowing rain with temp at 38 degrees.  But that didn’t stop us from our regular holiday delivery of Christmas cookies for our neighbors.  In addition to the traditional iced sugar cookies I tried out five other recipes, all of which yielded acceptable results.  The real surprise was the oatmeal cocoa bars (the Saran-wrapped chunks in the middle here).  They turned out like a very light brownie and I suspect they would be especially tasty with a lump of vanilla ice cream.

Yummmm!

The brownie chocolate chip cheesecake turned out great.  I let it cool overnight then just had to have a tiny wedge for breakfast this morning.

Real Winter

IMG_3067_bAfter a couple of small dustings earlier, today we got a more serious taste of winter.  It’s still not cold enough for lots of accumulation but we do have a couple of inches of sloppy slush to navigate through.  The good news is, Saturday the days start getting longer again!  This afternoon, we did a little pre-Christmas baking, testing a couple of new recipes including a chocolate ship brownie cheesecake.  I can’t wait for that little treat to emerge from the oven.

Yummy Thanksgiving Dinner

We decided to stay at home for Thanksgiving and I prepared a slow cooker recipe we’d done a couple of times before: it has become one of our favorites.  It’s a boneless turkey breast with kalamata olives, onion, sun-dried tomatoes, and artichoke hearts. We completed our plates with sweet potatoes, peas, dressing and gravy.  A little sangria topped off our most tasty holiday meal.

Bread Maker

My best Christmas gift is a little bread maker Trisha got me.  I love making bread the old-fashioned way but wow with this device you can spend 10 minutes assembling ingredients and have a warm loaf waiting when you get up in the morning or just in time for dinner.  It seems too easy.  So far I’ve made basic white, whole wheat and French loaves with great success.

Quiet Christmas

After tending to the bird feeders we opened a few gifts and are spending a leisurely day around the house.  Our only obligation is to deliver our traditional home-baked Christmas cookies to the neighbors. Trisha is charging up her new Nook Color e-reader and I may try out my new bread machine.  Dinner is a reprise of the Mediterranean turkey with yams that we had on Thanksgiving.  Tomorrow, we’re off for a few days retreat at Cannon Beach, Oregon, where we plan to take in the spa, watch the ocean, read, sit in the hot tub, see a movie or two, and read.

This critter is a little Texas steer, a gift from Trisha’s sister, Lisa.

Quiet End to ’09

Trisha and I spent a calm final 48 hours of 2009. On Wednesday, we stopped by the Bellevue Square Mall to get a new toaster, had lunch at Cheesecake Factory, then saw Avatar in 3D. The movie was visually stunning; I especially enjoyed the creative, colorful flora. New Year’s Eve was equally exciting. We began with an easy workout at the gym, had a light lunch then watched the Sherlock Holmes film. I didn’t think much of this incarnation of the famous sleuth but there was lots of action and the popcorn and Twix bar kept me alert. My favorite Holmes is still Jeremy Brett’s portrayal for British television. We finished off the day with a home-made pizza and a couple of hours of the Dog Whisperer.

Christmas Day

Trisha was up early as always to feed the birds and by 8:00 we were in front of the tree opening gifts. Taking advantage of the luscious weather we walked a ways up a nearby logging road that we haven’t visited much since we’ve been without dogs. It was a wonderful reminder of how beautiful the forest is and the soothing effect of the waterfalls. Later it was back to the Snoqualmie Casino buffet for an early Christmas dinner. It’s so decadent. I sampled a wide range of the offerings: turkey with stuffing, French toast, smoked bacon, crab legs, carrot cake. The day ended with a typical North Bend wind storm and we lost power around 7:00 so it was a quiet evening reading by candlelight until bed time.

Lovely Christmas Eve

We began our day with a vigorous workout at the gym. Trisha then readied Christmas cookies that we distributed to our neighbors. After an early dinner at the Snoqualmie Casino buffet we toured the Bellevue Botanical Gardens display of holiday lights. It’s a dramatic presentation with thousands of LED lights used to imitate garden plants and animals like poinsettias, clematis, grapes, sunflowers, butterflies, peacocks, etc.
