“The Window”
We had time to visit one of the Park’s famous vistas: “The Window” at Chisos Basin. It’s a grand view to the west into the Rio Grande River valley; and, a nice spot for lunch as it turned out.

Dinosaurs
We had a nice surprise upon entering Big Bend. The Park had just a few weeks earlier opened a very cool dinosaur exhibit that I had not discovered in any of my trip planning work. There were wonderful replicas of dinosaur fossils and excellent commentaries too. I couldn’t resist hamming it up with this Deinosuchus skull.

Heading to Big Bend
Today’s route took us from Fort Stockton to the north entrance of Big Bend National Park. It was a very tranquil drive with nearly no traffic and lovely overcast skies.

View east along Us-385 about two hours south of Stockton, TX
Carlsbad Caverns
Today we visited Carlsbad Caverns. It was great to visit in the off-season; there was almost no one else there so we could enjoy the experience in quiet. And the caverns were so much more spectacular than we expected. Trisha trekked the whole 1.4 miles along the “Big Room” route.

Petroglyph National Monument
Before leaving Albuquerque we made a short visit to Petroglyph National Monument, a place we had visited previously in May 2008. This time I had a better camera and good light, even though it was very windy.
Albuquerque Botanic Garden
Our first stop on the trip was the Albuquerque Botanic Garden. On a very chilly and windy day we confined our visit to the enclosed desert and tropical plant areas.
Off to New Mexico and Texas
We took off this morning at 11:45 headed first to Albuquerque; leaving Seattle on a beautiful day.
Rattlesnake Lake Chilly Morning
Trisha was off for a manicure so I decided to take a quick visit to Rattlesnake Lake to see what the morning light might present by way of photo ops. Not much, really. And it was very cold, especially without the gloves I left home.

Back from Bandon Dunes
I spent Tuesday and Wednesday at Bandon Dunes, playing 36 holes each day. I played OK on the first day, recording my best score ever on Pacific Dunes (85). On Wednesday I was kind of wiped out from a restless night’s sleep and slow play and didn’t do well at all. However, the scenery was as dramatic as ever, even with mostly overcast skies.
Pemaquid Lighthouse
This afternoon we visited the famous Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, first constructed in 1827. Here’s Trisha with her long-time friend, Rose Bensen.
