Back from Bandon Dunes
I spent Tuesday and Wednesday at Bandon Dunes, playing 36 holes each day. I played OK on the first day, recording my best score ever on Pacific Dunes (85). On Wednesday I was kind of wiped out from a restless night’s sleep and slow play and didn’t do well at all. However, the scenery was as dramatic as ever, even with mostly overcast skies.
Bandon Trails Sunrise
Although Trails is not my favorite Bandon course, it can still be a picturesque setting. This morning’s sunrise was dramatic. Even the starter took a few photos as I prepared to tee off.
Bandon Dunes Sunrise
In my seven trips to Bandon Dunes I’ve been blessed with such good weather. Although I had mostly overcast yesterday and even a bit of light rain at the very end of the day, I got another gorgeous sunrise this morning.
Another Bandon Sunrise
It seems that on every trip to Bandon Dunes I see amazing sunrises… like this one.
At Bandon Dunes
I had an easy drive from North Bend to Bandon and arrived in time to get in an hour of practice before sunset. Got this view of the 7th and 8th holes of the Bandon Dunes coursefrom behind the Pacific Dunes clubhouse.
Old Mac and Trails
It seems as though on every Bandon trip I end up playing the Old Macdonald and Trails courses on the same day. It’s a pretty demanding effort: Old Mac is just so expansive with long holes and distances between the tee boxes while trails is the hilliest of the Bandon Dunes tracks. Curiously, Old Mac has become my favorite course here in spite of its difficulty and unique truly links layout. I had my best round ever at Old Mac this morning with an 86. And I was holding my own on Trails –my nemesis course here– until I just wore out and carded triple bogeys on 16 and 18 for a final score of 94.
Bandon Dunes Again
I can’t seem to stay away from this place no matter how mediocre my golf game is. And with the current heat wave in North Bend I had more than enough incentive to head south for the third time this year. What’s not to like with views like this one looking north from the 16th tee at the Bandon Dunes course.
And here’s a panorama of the 16th fairway, one of the most beautiful golf holes in America (tee box on the right, green between the ocean and those dark green shrubs on the left).
For the record, I shot very poor rounds of 95 (Bandon Dunes) and 98 (Pacific Dunes), two of my worst score here ever.
At Bandon Dunes Again
After my truly pathetic play on my February trip to Bandon Dunes I was antsy to get back. So I was on the road by 7:30 and at the practice facility around 3:45. With the longer days, I had time before dinner to snap a bunch of photos on the always lovely Bandon Beach. I like this one of the driftwood.
And, I finally got an interesting view of the famous “Face Rock”:
Old Macdonald and Home
I teed off at 7:30 this morning; it was nippy but beautiful again. Shot a shaky 93 (way off my 87 here last November). Had a great sunset last evening. This is looking west from the 17th tee at Pacific Dunes.
Trails and Pacific Dunes
It was another absolutely perfect day. My golf was marginally better but still pretty poor. I love the Pacific Dunes course, no matter how I play.
