Where’s Winter?
It’s official… it was the warmest Seattle January ever. The average temperature was 47 degrees and it didn’t get below freezing even once at the official Airport weather station. The typical January average temperature is 41.3 degrees and last year it was a bit cooler than that. Even with the mild weather, the persistent rain and short days resulted in just two rounds of golf for the month, well short of the four to five I usually get in.
Breaking Out the Snow Shovel
We had our first measurable snow this evening. I had to scrape an inch or so of snow from around Trisha’s bird feeders. I’m not complaining though: it was this week last year that we got the first foot of snow in that relentless series of winter storms. And the forecast is for temperatures pushing 50 later in the week.
Winter Already?
Wow! It was just 89 days ago that we had the 103-degree day. Now it’s not even November yet and we have an early introduction to winter: the first snowfall on Mt. Si. But that was at the end of the day after…. monsoon rains early in the day, an hour of so of sunshine in the afternoon, spectacular thunder and lightening in the early evening followed by hail, then sleet, and finally, around 10:00 a light dusting of snow. Oh, and the first flood warnings too.The strangest weather day in our 14+ years here and the earliest snowfall.
Brrrr!!!
As I headed out for my 7:37 tee time the dashboard showed 36 degrees. As I strode down the second fairway there was even a bit of frost on the ground. I love fall in Washington. I had a so-so round of golf –shooting 88 at Mt. Si— but what a spectacular late September morning.
Rain…. At Last!
I swear I could hear the plants “Ahhhing” in relief. We finally got some real rain; for the first time in 83 days. A light sprinkle fell most of the night to end our three-month rainless streak.
Weather Records
June and July have been seen numerous weather records…
- We had the hottest day in Seattle history with that 103 degrees on July 29
- The low that day was 71, marking the first time in Seattle weather records that the temperature failed to drop below 70 at some point during the day
- There was virtually no rain with an official 0.06 inches of precipitation
- We had five days above 90 degrees; we usually don’t have that many all summer
- July followed an also very dry (0.18 inches of rain) and warm (three degrees above normal) June
- There were a record 29 consecutive days without rain (May 20-June 17)
Record Heat
With a 103 degree reading Seattle hit a record high today; the highest temperature ever and nearly 30 degrees above the historical average high temp for the date. Locally, things were even toastier: Redmond hit 107 and North Bend 113. The Microsoft Golf League play went on as scheduled however so I got to enjoy two hours in the late afternoon sunshine chasing golf balls. At least I finally had a good league outing, shooting my best score ever: 41 on the Eagle’s Talon front nine. It also turns out that July was the hottest month ever with an average temp of 69.5 degrees.
First Day of Summer–Brrrrrr!!!
As we headed out to the gym this morning the outdoor temperature read 48 degrees. What bizarre weather!
In a Groove – 85 at Mt. Si
After Wednesday’s two-over par 38 I couldn’t wait, of course, to get back out on the links. In spite of the light drizzle and occasional showers I headed to Mt. Si for an early afternoon round. I didn’t strike the ball as well as Wednesday, especially off the tee, but my short game was very solid and I recorded a consistent 42-43 for an 85, one of my best rounds ever from the blue tees. A missed three-foot birdie putt and an eight on hole number 16 kept me from a potential best-ever round.
Those showers, btw, ended the record-tying twenty-nine consecutive rainless days. We got a real drenching in the early evening and the plants and trees are looking revived already.
Still No Rain
It’s official: it’s the driest spring in Seattle history with 29 straight days without rain equaling the 1982 record. We don’t usually have this kind of parched stretch until July-August. It’s been nice but hard to keep all our plants happy.
