Fall is Definitely Here
It’s amazing, really. Each year just around Halloween, it’s as if some spirit flips a switch and the clouds and drizzle descend. We still have a few leaves to cheer up the view but not for long.
Signs of Winter
I had my annual cardiology check-up this morning with stellar results. Down 6 pounds since last year, blood pressure at 116/68 and resting pulse at 52. The other big news is the first snowfall at the Mt. Rainier visitor center:
Another Warm Weather Record
From the National Weather Service-Seattle:
High in Seattle today 74. 114th day this year with a high 70° or more. Record for # of days with highs 70 plus in a year…115 (1992).
So in addition to the record number of days over 80 we now have one for days over 70.
Record Rain Day
Who would have thought? After ten weeks of drought we get several rain showers including a huge downpour late this afternoon that brought the total for the day to.90 inches… a record for July.
Rain At Last
We got some rain Friday night and throughout the day on and off on Saturday. Then a good drenching overnight into Sunday with more recorded rainfall (~.38 inches) than in the previous twelve weeks combined.
More Hot Weather
The National Weather Service-Seattle reported a high of 95 degrees today, tying the day’s record. I see that it was 91 in Miami, FL. So far the average high in July is 72.5 degrees, three degrees more than the July record set in 1941. I notice, too, that we’ve had 0.2 inches of rain since May 15, and 0.18 of that fell in one day. Here’s what an unwatered section of our yard looks like:
At least with the crumby air quality we get some nice sunsets:

Heat Wave Record
We tied a Seattle heat-wave record today with 15 consecutive days with a daily high temperature in the 80s; and, five of those days in the 90s. Average highs for those two weeks were thirteen degrees above average. This follows the warmest, driest June ever. High temps were 73 or more all but three days in June and the only rainfall was the piddling 0.18 on June 1st. Last year it only got above 73 five times in June and we had rain on nine days.
