Woodpeckers’ Puzzle
Posted by nbdog in Entertainment, jigsaw puzzles on 3-Feb-2014
After our success with the Brittanys puzzle I couldn’t wait to do another one. We found a great subject: pileated woodpeckers. It was quite challenging: 1,000 pieces with the two adult bird bodies consisting mostly of slight shades of black! But it ended up being a lovely picture and it only took us six days to do.

I’m glad it wasn’t even close. My nerves couldn’t have taken another hapless offensive performance with the defense hanging on for a slim victory. After all those years following the pathetic Detroit Lions, the Seahawks have been to the Super Bowl twice since we moved here and now have a victory. Very cool!
41 MPG

I did our first complete fill-up on the Lexus CT200h today and see we got 40.65 miles per gallon… just tooling around locally. Almost no interstate miles. I calculated driving the the same 322 miles in the Acura would have cost us around $8.37 more in gas. So just 5,000 more tanks of gas and the Lexus will have paid for itself!
Spring-Like Day
As I neared the end of my round of golf this afternoon, I couldn’t help but think about friends and family in New Jersey, Texas, Ohio, and Michigan. The official high temp was 56 but the reading on the car and outside the house recorded 58; really amazing for the end of January. At about the same time I see the temperature in Ann Arbor was 10, 38 in Austin, 13 in Toledo and 18 in Sicklerville. Brrrr! We are supposed to see another three days of 50-plus temps with lots of sunshine.
Puzzling Brittanys

For Christmas, Trisha got me a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle featuring two Brittanys tracking a pheasant. This appealed of course to my obsessive/compulsive tendencies and for a whole week we spent innumerable hours hovering over the dining room table. I recall doing many jigsaw puzzles as a kid and they are just as addictive now as then. Those Brittanys are regal beasts, though.
Another Lovely Day
It looks like we’re at the beginning of a stretch of nice weather. This morning’s sunrise sure was spectacular:
To the links…finally
We’ve had some pretty dreary, cool weather for the past week so, so I hadn’t played any golf since January 6th. This morning, I decided to play in spite of the fog and cool temperature. I started off nicely with a tap-in par on number 1 but could manage only one more par over the next nine holes so I was at bogey golf heading to the 11th tee. From there on, things went smoothly and I shot just two over par for the final eight holes featuring a 54-foot birdie putt on number 15 and pars on 16, 17, and 18 for a final score of 83. Not bad for the middle of January.

Break in the Weather, Quick Round of Golf
After looking at the weather forecast for the rest of January I decided to take advantage of a benign day and get in a round of golf at Mt. Si. It was a very brisk fr0nt nine with winds clocked at 15 mph and gusts over 30 mph. I hung in there with an easy birdie of hole #6 and with pars on the final three holes managed a satisfying 85.
