Baking for a Cold Week

This time of year we like to have some of my banana bread around for part of a quick breakfast or even an after-dinner dessert.  So I whipped up two loaves this morning.  I have been making this bread since about 1976 or so; it comes from a Sunset bread recipe book I got when living in Iowa City.  It’s still one of my favorite breads.

Edward the Dragon

We’ve had “Eddie” the Dragon guarding our shade garden since the summer but now he has a Christmas ribbon and it seemed like a good time for a holiday photo:

Brrrr! Coldest Days of the Year

We are in the same deep freeze that much of the country is experiencing.  It was around 25 degrees overnight –the coldest day of 2013 so far— with a forecast of 13 degrees for Saturday night: super cold for us.

Wow! 75

The rain held off for another day so I decided to squeeze in one more round of golf before the rain and snow forecasted for the weekend.  A birdie on the first hole was a portent of the super round that followed.  I cruised through ten holes at two over par then rolled in a 42-foot putt on number eleven then followed that up with a third birdie on number fourteen.  I ended up tying my best score at three over par 75.

Pleasant 18 at Mt. Si

What a difference forth-eight hours made.  After Monday’s ice-box round at Druid’s Glen this morning’s forty degrees seemed balmy.  Our string a gorgeous fall days continued and I shot a very satisfying 83 in spite of recording an eight on the ninth hole.

Another Frigid Round

This morning it was off to Druid’s Glen. It was a bit warmer than last week so I was shocked at the condition of the course.  A few greens had a visible coating of ice and many bunkers were as hard as concrete.  My partner Ron and I struggled through the round anyway but this will be our last visit to Druid’s until spring.  In spite of the crumby conditions, it was still another spectacular day to be out.

Really Winter Golf

At 24 degrees, I think today was the coldest round of golf I’ve ever played.  Even with the chill, it was another truly spectacular morning.  And I played steady golf hitting thirteen fairways and needing just twenty-three putts en route to an 88 score.

First Round of Winter Golf

It’s not officially winter yet, of course, but this morning’s freezing temperatures were cold enough for me to consider today the first round of winter golf.  And what an exquisite start to the day it was: heavy frost, wispy fog, snow on the mountain, a large heard of elk in their usual place in the meadow opposite Mt. Si Golf Course.  On our way to the 10th tee I got this shot of Meodowbrook Slough adjacent to the parking lot.

Spectacular Fall

We’ve had an absolutely stunning fall display in our back yard this year.  The perfect spring and summer weather followed by a so far mild November has the trees showing off their best colors.  Here’s our little golden smoke tree this afternoon.

Dow Record

I still can’t get over how the stock market has recovered from the 2007-08 crash.  Today’s close of 15,747 is 9,240 points up from the Great Recession low of 6,507 on March 9, 2009; just 1,704 days ago.
