Grosbeak
I don’t have any yard tasks today and I’m taking a day off from golf so I decided to try to get some pictures of the back yard birds. Here’s one I like:
Finally. Tanager Photo.

We first spied tanagers in the yard a couple of years back but they are quite shy and I’ve never seen them with camera in hand. Then this past weekend I almost got one while shooting flowers. Finally, this morning one was visiting the finch feeder just outside the family room and I was able to get a few images through the glass. Not great resolution but still it’s nice to have a digital memento of this lovely critter’s visit.
Another Trip to Gamble Sands
Ron Hillis and I did an overnight, Tuesday/Wednesday, two-rounds trip to Gamble Sands. The weather was great except for the gusty winds; breezy enough to be annoying. I shot so-so rounds of 91 and 88, in each outing suffering from just a few bad holes but otherwise playing ok. We did see a couple of snakes and I got a photo of this handsome fellow on the 17th fairway this afternoon.
Farewell to Lucy
Mary Anderson, the daughter of our neighbor Nancy, has spent the past several months living at home with mom while job hunting. This morning she headed off to her new post at Central College in Pella, Iowa. We had to say goodbye to our surrogate dog, Lucy, a beautiful, athletic black lab. We can’t wait until they visit again in the summer.
What a Cutie

The little brown squirrel that spent so many hours eating peanuts in the feeder hanging from our backyard maple was devoured by a hawk last fall. Then, just a couple of months ago, this little fella appeared and is a regular visitor every day. He gets a special stash of peanuts in the morning then forages under the bird feeders the rest of the day.
“Terrence” is Back
The lovely pileated woodpecker who we’ve named “Terrence” has become a regular visitor to the yard. He stopped by this morning while I was having my morning coffee.
More Ducks

The variety in ducks in amazing. This puzzle was pretty challenging for just 500 pieces. But those quackers are certainly beautiful animals.
Visit from Bear; Homeownership Adventures
Posted by nbdog in Animals, Around the house on 23-Apr-2014
As we were preparing to go to bed last night we heard the unmistakable sounds of crashing bird feeders. I grabbed a flashlight expecting to see cavorting raccoons but instead was greeted with the sight of a very large black bear feasting on the two suet feeders we normally leave out a night. A couple of shouts and he lumbered off toward the back of the yard. Today we discovered he simply tore down a segment of the wire fencing at the back of the lot, the very same spot where I think a bear tried to enter the yard a couple of years ago. Amazingly, he managed to not crush a single plant nor break any branches off the several rhododendrons he passed. There were a few nice paw impressions in the soft soil that give an indication of the size of our hefty visitor.

In addition to making the fence repair, I had to replace insulation in the crawl space today as well. On Monday evening we noticed a wet spot on the dining room carpet near the front door. After hailing a plumber, we found we had a leak in the pipe feeding the front outside faucet so I got to spend a couple of hours soaking up water and replacing wet insulation. A busy day indeed.
New Duck
We had a treat today…. Joining our regular small troop of mallards a beautiful male wood duck stopped by for an afternoon snack. What a cool bird!
At Least I Wasn’t the Only Turkey on the Course
Once again, for the third time, I struggled to tame the Bandon Trails course. A few bad holes and not enough pars produced another mediocre 94. On the next trip to Bandon, I’m going to play the Trails course first, before I wear myself out on the other courses. Still, it was another delightful stroll through the forest accompanied by a family of turkeys just near the 16th tee box.
