Woodpeckers Puzzle

This one proved to be the most difficult of the puzzles we’ve done so far.  In addition to the challenge of the similarly-colored birds and tree trunks, it had many very bizarrely-shaped pieces. It is nice, though, and we are thinking of keeping it as a reference for the many woodpecker varieties we see in the backyard.

Hungry Squirrel

This little guy has been with us for several seasons now; one winter he even nested in Trisha’s flower pots behind the garage.  Now he seems to reside in the neighbor’s yard but makes daily visits to the peanut feeder.  He is adorably tiny and totally unintimidated by the much larger gray squirrels that also feed on the patio.

Skagit River Eagles

We finally made a trek to US Route 2 along the Skagit River to see the bald eagles.  It was a bit early in the season but we did see several of the majestic critters perched in the trees and flying over the river in search of salmon.

On the way back we took route 530 along the Sauk River where I got these misty view of forest and river.

Blue Jays

Even though the Stellar’s Jays are daily visitors to our feeders I rarely take photos of them.  They are so common –and annoyingly noisy– I pretty muck ignore them.  Watching them this morning I decided I should have at least one photo of these most frequent and prolific of our backyard grazers.

Another Visit by the Hawk

We’ve learned that whenever the yard is eerily devoid of small birds around our patio feeders it probably means the local hawk in nearby.  This morning he spent a good deal of time swooping through the yard mostly terrorizing the jays.  And a few times he took a break just outside the kitchen window in our big red Japanese maple.

A Special Day–Wild Horses

We weren’t sure what to expect as we made the drive to Hot Springs, SD and the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary.  What a marvelous experience.  It was just Trisha and me as our guide, Mark, drove us over hundreds of acres of the sanctuary to see some of the beautiful mustangs running free on the vast grasslands.  Some of these magical animals were curious and tame enough that they approached us and we could pat their gorgeous snouts and feed them handfuls of grass.  It was just so cool to see hundreds of horses living completely free. Here’s a short video

Raptors at Skamania

During the summer the Skamania lodge invites the Raptor House Rehabilitation Center in Yakima to do presentations on their program and some of the birds they are treating.  We watched a bit of this and eventually approached this magnificent bald eagle who had sat patiently during the long talk, seeming to enjoy just posing for photos.  Among the several owls and hawks the raptor folks brought out this fellow was the most impressive.

“Terrence” Our Personal Pileated Woodpecker

We’ve been blessed this summer to have frequent visits from at least a couple pileated woodpeckers who we think are mother and offspring and whom we indiscriminately named “Terrence.” They are a bit shy so it’s hard to get a good photo of them but here’s a link to several along with a 30-second video clip.

Raccoon Babies

We haven’t seen our backyard raccoon for many weeks and haven’t thought much about it.  Then this afternoon mother raccoon showed up with two adorable youngsters.  They explored the bird feeders on the maple tree and the bird bath underneath.  I tossed them a few nuts and some old bread.  After a quick snack they headed off into the woods.

Dogsitting

When Trisha was presented with the opportunity to take care of a neighbor’s dog for a week, she just couldn’t say no.  So we have the delightful company this week of Miss Lucy, a sweet, very energetic eight-month old black lab.  Today we took her to Rattlesnake Lake where she explored the paths and took a couple of brief dips in a creek.
