First Day of Spring

First Day Cover from the 1947 International Philatelic Exhibition in NY
After a little tease of nice weather yesterday, the first day of spring brought more rain, sometimes heavy and sometimes mixed with a few snowflakes. In fact, it’s snowing again as I jot this post.
I’m still wading through my stamp collection, now cataloging the first day covers. I stopped collecting them over ten years ago but I still have over 500 of them. That’s part of the delight in the cataloging project, I guess: really finding out what I have.
I’m getting antsy, though. My thumb has healed enough that I’m going to hit some golf balls this weekend if the forecast for sunny weather holds. I chipped a few in the back yard yesterday and it felt OK.

More of the Same…

… dreary weather. As usual we are right on the edge of the snow line. We’ve had light flurries here all morning while just three miles down the hill in North Bend it’s a light rain. It looks like more of the same for the next week at least so I’m still hunkered down with my stamps and occasional breaks to watch NCAA basketball.

A Little Color in the Drizzle

As winter lingers and we endure this endless march of rainy days, it’s nice to look outside and see a few little sparks of color in the garden. Trisha planted some hellebores last year and they are stunning winter bloomers. During a brief break in the rain this afternoon I raced outside and had these little ladies pose for me.

Still Winter

Winter lingers. We awoke this morning to a lovely coating of snow and snow squalls and sun breaks alternated throughout the day. All so typical of this time of year. I guess I timed my hand surgery right: there’s no sign of any sunny days until Tuesday.

Ice Storm

What a day! A nearly one-inch glaze has covered everything overnight. It’s beautiful but is proving very damaging to many of our trees and shrubs. Beginning last night we could hear periodic sounds of crack!-thud! as scores of branches and tree tops cascaded to the ground under the enormous weight of the ice. As I went out this morning to survey the damage I snapped some photos of the delicate dried stems and buds surrounded by their crystalline coating.

Where’s the Rain?
The weird weather continues. After the rainiest April in history, we had a very mild summer and now a nearly rain-free fall. Just a week before the beginning of winter Seattle has had less December rainfall than Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Diego. It’s been a bit chilly –27 degrees this morning– but little rain. Climate experts are still warning, however, about a wetter than normal winter ahead.

Eek! First snow of the year
We had some sleet over the weekend but this afternoon we have a little dusting of real snow. I guess I’m just as happy for winter to get here and get it over with so we can get back to yard work and golf as soon as possible.

Fall in North Bend

It’s been clear since we returned from our California/Arizona trip that it’s fall. There’s no escaping the early sunsets, persistent gray skies and cool, drizzly days. But we also get scenes like this: a delightfully cool afternoon with bands of sun, clouds and rain showers that occasionally paint a lovely rainbow over the mountains.

Another Weather Record: A Month’s Rain in Two Days
Before today is over, the weather experts predict we’ll have had more than 1.5 inches of rain from a single day-and-a-half storm. That’s almost the average total rainfall for the entire Month of May. Earlier this week, there was a story in the Seattle Times about the 65 feet of snow still covering the North Cascades Highway which typically would have been cleared three-four weeks ago.

It’s Official: April was COLD!
We’re thankful for no tornadoes, floods or earthquakes. But for golfers and plant lovers April in North Bend was a bizarre weather month. It was the coldest April since they started keeping weather records in 1891. There was only one day when the high temperature was over 50 degrees (compared to eight last year). Worse for the plants, overnight lows were below freezing every night. As for precipitation, not only did it rain on 20 of the 30 days –that’s typical– but it snowed on five days.
This past Thursday I was looking at one of those lists of daily high and low temps for U.S. and foreign cities that they publish every day in the Seattle Times. It has over 140 cities: our day-time high temperature was lower than almost anywhere on the planet…literally. Only five cities in the list were colder.
Depressingly, the extended forecast is not promising. Summer is likely to be colder than normal the weather experts say.
