Squirrel Deportations Continue
I captured three more gray squirrels today and transferred them to the other side of the river. Our bird seed should last a lot longer now but I think there are still a couple of them hanging around nearby.

Battling the Squirrels
The big gray squirrels have become quit the pests now that they are so numerous: I counted seven on the patio few days ago. So I put out the trap I bought a while back and got the first captive within fifteen minutes.

Pastoral Rumination
On the way to the gym this morning I stopped to snap a photo of Mt. Si and was greeted with much excited mooing.

Owl!
After a full day in the yard cleaning up yesterday’s fallen tree I was just about the head into the house when a bird flew right in front of me and landed in the nearby cedar. I peered in and saw what I thought was ababy owl; it seemed so small. It was already nearly dark but I grabbed my camera and did my best to get some photos. Only after I got them onto the computer and brightened them up a did I realize the little critter had killed one of the birds feeding on our patio and was apparently getting ready for a meal. I think it was a Northern Pygmy Owl.

Elk Sunset
I finished a round of golf at Mt. Si at nearly 5:00 and upon exiting the parking lot came upon a nice view of the local elk heard grazing in the sunset.
Another Warm Weather Record
From the National Weather Service-Seattle:
High in Seattle today 74. 114th day this year with a high 70° or more. Record for # of days with highs 70 plus in a year…115 (1992).
So in addition to the record number of days over 80 we now have one for days over 70.
“Terrence” the Woodpecker
This pileated woodpecker, who we’ve named “Terrence”, has become a regular visitor to our yard. We think there might actually be a couple of them showing up throughout the day. It’s quite a sight.
Bear Persistence
We had bear incursions Monday andTuesday nights and again around 4:00 a.m. this morning. What a shock, however, to see this largish black bear on our patio just a few minutes ago. Worse, he seems totally fearless. First, I pounded on the windows… to no effect. In fact, he approached the sliding door and looked right at me through the glass. I had fortunately closed the screen portion only thirty minutes ago. He backed off, snatched one of the bird feeders and started to chow down. I banged pots together and shouted at him. No effect. I threw my shoes at him. Unimpressed. Finally, I beaned him with a rock and he ambled away, through the portion of our fence that he tore down to get in.
Busy Day
We were up early for a 7:25 flight to Anchorage. The afternoon featured a leisurely van tour up to the Mount Alyeska Tram near Girdwood followed by very yummy lunch at The Bake Shop. Finally, we visited the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center where we got great up-close views of moose, bear, fox, eagles, etc., all being rehabilitated at the Center. A very scrumptious dinner was had at Simon & Seafort’s.
Tracy Arm Fjord
Our trip really began today with a day-long journey out of Juneau to Tracy Arm Fjord where we saw several glaciers and a variety of wildlife: whales, eagles, seals, sea birds, et al.
